In California businesses with between 2 and 50 employees are classified as a “small business”. Businesses that fall within this category are able to take advantage of certain laws that apply to group health insurance policies. One of the main advantages to a company that is classified as a small business is that a group health insurance policy guarantees every employee health coverage regardless of any pre-existing conditions they or their immediate family members may have.
In order for a small business to qualify for group health insurance they must submit proof that they are a legitimate business and proof that the people to be covered are employees who work at that business. This is usually done by submitting copies of the businesses IRS or tax returns to the health insurance companies’ underwriter.

Some small businesses only consist of two people. These extra small groups are able to qualify for a guaranteed issue policy. If you have a business that only consist of a Partnership of 2 people, you can still qualify. However these group health plans need a little extra work but, the same guarantee issue still applies.

When all the proper paperwork has been received a group health insurance policy is issued and each employee will receive their own health card ID.

Thing to remember when shopping for a small group health insurance:

    • Review the plan co-pays, deductible and the annual out of pocket maxes.
    • Review the monthly rates from several different insurance companies.
    • If you have out of state employees be sure the plan will cover them.
    • Find a good Health Insurance Agent to help make enrolling in the plan easy.
